Requirements
Must be ENERGY STAR qualified.
You do not have to replace all the windows/doors/skylights in your home to qualify. And it doesn't need to be a replacement either - installing a new window where there wasn't one previously (like in an addition) qualifies.
Tax Credit does NOT include installation costs.
The 2011 Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency has established the qualifying level for windows and doors at a U-Factor of .30 or less, and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of .30 or less.
To qualify with an Earthwise window for federal tax credit, the residing homeowner must do the following:
- Purchase a qualifying Earthwise window. The Earthwise window must have a U-Factor of .30 or lower and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient of .30 or lower.
- Make the purchase and install the qualifying windows and door products between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011.
- Achieve all other requirements specified in The 2011 Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency Package.
- Collect Sales receipts, NFRC, Energy Star and/or Manufacturers Certification labels or test result and maintain with all other tax information.
- Claim only the cost of the products as the federal tax credit does not apply to the installation cost of the products. This will require that your contractor/dealer provide you with a product only invoice or receipt.
- Remember that the federal tax credit is for 10% of the product purchase only with a maximum credit of $500.00 total ( $200.00 for windows ) for 2011.
- Make sure you claim the tax credit for your purchase on your federal taxes for the 2011 tax filing.
Additional Information: The government is expected to post additional information at www.energystar.gov. The IRS is expected to post official guidance at www.irs.gov in early 2011. To the best of our knowledge, certification letters from manufacturers are no longer necessary and other circumstances vary widely. Consumers should consult with their tax advisor for further guidance as to what type of documentation is needed.
